Situation - You are observing someone crying or prone to cry, sensitive, sick and what to do
When someone cries or is prone to cry, plus showing a degree of sensitivity or insensitivity, plus it can be yet another key observation that can make it easier for you to pick their pattern
Generally, this consultancy uses the various techniques based
in the positive side of things. This is really part of a more advanced 'go to' section. Crying
is on the negative side, but useful.
Seeing others cry and how sensitive or insensitive they are are easy types of behaviour to observe. Here is also what to do
to comfort them!
Plus what folk do when they are sick, or feeling sick!
Conducted and composed by Modern Maven Elizabeth Hunter™ - Last Update August 2, 2022
1. Can it be the Director - ESTJ?
Dialogue: The Director rarely breaks down and cries. They usually prefer to keep their emotions inside and do not want to be seen as weak by others. They might feel as if people are judging them, especially if they allow themselves to cry in front of them. They definitely feel emotions in the same way as other people but do not feel comfortable outwardly expressing these feelings. They might allow themselves to tear up or cry a little in front of someone they trust deeply. They have to be sure that person will not put them down for being upset. This is a very rare occurrence.
What to do: Observe their eyes.
Crybaby Tendency: Cries quietly out of sight and walks away as if nothing has happened. The only outward signs are damp eyes and a guarded and weary looking expression. Category 4/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 1: Becomes paralyzed from the neck down when crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 5/16. Has such a fragile ego. They get very upset about slight deviations or wrong things being said. This is both funny and also slightly sad in that they feel so much about such little things. However, despite their occasional tantrums, they have a more insensitive side. They are not insensitive as in a “mean” way. But their stoicism tends to make sure that they disregard emotions. Sometimes a shoulder is needed to cry on, not a solution.
Sick Explorer™: Works fervently from bed on their laptop while internally scolding their immune system for not trying harder.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When feeling overwhelmed or dismal, it is important to get a little time alone to just breathe and reflect. Needs to take a break from all responsibilities and tasks and just rest the mind. The last thing needed is someone smothering or asking, “Are you okay?” every five minutes. Exercising, catching up on some rest, or showering can also help feel renewed. When in the shower (image not displayed) imagine that they are washing away all the worries, stressors and bad experiences of the day. After some time alone see if there is a trusted friend that you can talk to. Being able to vent about your problems and struggles without judgment or criticism is important. Having someone who can help see things in a new perspective or give you information that might lead to solutions can help you to feel not so “stuck.”
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: The most minute sickness is all it needs. Weak as water.
2. Can it be the Developer - ENTJ?
Dialogue: The Developer definitely tries to remain guarded most of the time and dislikes crying in front of anyone. They will usually bottle up their emotions for so long until finally they force their way to the surface. When the Developer has experienced a deep betrayal from someone they trust they often cannot stop themselves from feeling this pain. They will try to keep their tears private and truly do not want to be seen as weak by others. They might feel like expressing their pain or sadness in this way is going to make people feel like they can walk all over the Developer. It takes a lot for the Developer to trust someone enough to cry in front of them but it means a lot if they reach that point.
What to do: Observe their eyes.
Crybaby Tendency: Cries quietly out of sight and walks away as if nothing has happened. The only outward signs are damp eyes and a guarded and weary looking expression. Category 4/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: Does not really possess the ability to cry.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 9/16. Easy to put the 'bully' further up on the insensitivity scale, but they are deeply sensitive about their emotions. The difference between many 'NT' types the Developer is that the latter truly understands social customs. They generally tend to accept them but these conventions will get ruthlessly cut down if they need to achieve their goal. This applies especially with pleasantries. They tend to be less insensitive as they usually have a good understanding of how their actions and words affect people - and that they are sometimes just cruel. Knowing how your actions affect someone negatively and continuing to do it is not insensitive; it is just plain mean. The Developer can can have a problem with this. Also, they tend to lash out with their emotions, especially anger and can give the Achiever a run for their money with fury. The Developer can frequently be sensitive and emotional.
Sick Explorer™: Rests for about 30 minutes, decides that is enough self-care and then gets back to work spreading germs.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: Finds comfort in getting out of the current location. Whether leaving the room or driving across town, going somewhere different seems to help calm the nerves. Exercise is also relaxing and de-stressing. After having a little time, talking to a trusted friend or advisor can be really encouraging. Being able to “vent” to someone trusted without being judged, criticized or coddled is important. Does not want anyone to be overly-sympathetic or emotional; just be listened to in an understanding way. After having the chance to get all the frustrations out of the system will enjoy being able to discuss information or ideas that can lead to practical solutions.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: Totally selfish in spreading germs when sick.
3. Can it be the Results - ESTP?
Dialogue: Results people definitely try not to cry often but they can become emotional if they are under extremely stress. They will usually only cry when they are alone or with someone they trust deeply. They will often bottle up their sadness until it all comes pouring out. They can be a bit emotional, even though they are thinking types. They often have a hard time holding back their emotions especially when they are overwhelmed with negative feelings.
What to do: Watch out to see if they are stressed.
Crybaby Tendency: Rarely, but when they do it is a flood. Category 3/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: The manner by which Mr. Trump seems to follow this guide is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 14/16. The Results' desire for fun and stimulation often turns into insensitivity and callousness. They are not cruel; just extremely offensive. This is built into their personality, a desire to be authentic but also audacious. They naturally create controversy. However, the mean spirit is not always there; they are just offensive to be offensive. To shock. Not to hurt people.
Sick Explorer™: Pops some drugs, has an energy drink and goes about their business as usual. If it is not terminal, what is there to complain about?
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When disillusioned or down, important to get some time alone. Needs need to get away from everyone and everything and just get alone to regain equilibrium. Coming up with a contingency plan or positive experience to look forward to can also be a comfort. Likes to know that they have options and they tend to generate a lot of options naturally so that if one plan falls through there are several others that can take its place. Getting out and being in nature can also lift spirits. Probably feels better when can get a change of scenery, go for a jog or take part in a recreational activity. While they may enjoy talking to a good friend or venting, it is also important that the other person does not get too emotional or overly-sympathetic. This patterns HATES being pestered about emotions.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: An inconsiderate germ spreader when it comes to sickness.
4. Can it be the Inspirational - ENTP?
Dialogue: The Inspirational who has learned to become more at ease with their emotions will not be afraid to shed the occasional tear. They will rarely let themselves fall into complete sobs though and reserve this for only the most tragic of circumstances. Most Inspirationals put on a rather hard exterior but are actually very warm on the inside. They care about people which can sometimes cause them to become emotional over sad videos or movie scenes. Connecting with that emotion can cause the Inspirational to feel a crack in their otherwise firm exterior. Generally, Inspirationals only find themselves crying in extreme situations.
What to do: Observe this at funerals and similar situations.
Crybaby Tendency: Rarely, but when they do it is a flood. Category 3/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: Having all their video games and electronics confiscated by the government is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 16/16. Be careful here. Least sensitive = Most insensitive. No brainer here. Their desire to shock, together with other ExTP types, is exacerbated by their intuition. The Inspirational will intentionally steer conversations to the rocks just to have fun. Example: The Thomas the Tank Engine drone flying over a city, exploding while smiling. That is the Inspirational.
Sick Explorer™: Develops a plethora of strange new medicines that they test on themselves, ultimately extending their sickness weeks longer than necessary.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When feeling overwhelmed or sad it often is comforting to get away from everyone and everything. Take some time to check in with your body. Had enough sleep, enough food or enough water? This pattern notoriously forgets their physical needs as they pursue new ideas and projects. Take some time to eat a healthy meal, go for a jog or take a nap. Exploring a new environment can also help to feel more optimistic. Go somewhere new and walk around and take in the sights and experiences. When feel as if you are physically and mentally more calm, ask one a trusted friend or family member for some help. Find someone who can listen with empathy and support before trying to offer solutions or brainstorm new ideas.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: Very odd approach to sickness.
5. Can it be the Persuader - ENFJ?
Dialogue: The Persuader often holds back their tears especially when they are in the company of those close. They do not want to burden others with their emotions and will consider how their tears will affect other people. Instead of letting out their sadness, the Persuader will bottle this up and pretend as if they are fine. They do not want to be viewed as weak or incapable especially by those close. Persuaders can be surprisingly guarded with their emotions and simply do not feel safe exposing themselves in this way. They do sometimes cry when they feel overwhelmed or stressed, but will find a place where they can do this and not be seen by others.
What to do: Difficult to observe.
Crybaby Tendency: Probably cries over a deep internalised crisis. Category 2/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: Being unable to comfort their child when the child is in distress is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 6/16. The most expressive type. May be classified as most sensitive if it was solely based on the loudest volume. They will show their rage, their joy and their sadness easily. However, they are generally a bit tougher and can actually get into the cut and thrust of debate on occasions.
Sick Explorer™: Maintains their commitments with a sunny face – not wanting to burden other people with their sickness. Goes home and crashes hard.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When gloomy or overwhelmed it can be very comforting to be in the presence of the people that are trusted. They want to be able to fully express what is going on in their heart and find validation and affirmation from loved ones. It is important not to be judged or given a lot of practical solutions at this time. Just need to be able to get emotions and feelings outside of themselves so can process them and work them out. It can also be comforting to get a change of scenery. Getting away from the location of something negative can instantly lift mood. Being in nature, visiting a favourite coffee shop or walking along the beach can all help to feel re-energized. Many also feel comforted by listening to songs that resonate with their feelings but have an upbeat, optimistic tempo.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: Another germ spreader in relation to sickness.
6. Can it be the Appraiser - ESFJ
Dialogue: Appraisers are extremely conscious of other people’s feelings which can cause them to bottle up their own emotions. If the Appraiser feels like their tears will be a burden to those around them, they will often keep their pain to themselves. They do not want to upset someone else by crying and will hold back. Appraisers can sometimes be seen as much more stoic even though they are warm and caring people. If they feel comfortable with someone though, the Appraiser can work towards being more open. They will often become emotional over the smallest things and will tear up when they see sad videos or hear a sad story. They simply will not express these feelings outwardly, and usually only do this when they are alone.
What to do: Watch for this when the Appraiser is being held accountable in the workplace or similar. This can be particularly annoying to managers, especially the High Ds and the Enhancer.
Crybaby Tendency: The tears are endless. Category 1/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: When their favourite celebrity couple breaks up is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 3/16. Has a slightly thicker skin than the Practitioner (not that difficult) because they interact with a wide range of people. They become most upset if people continue to be offensive. While the Practitioner gets upset over the subject, the Appraiser has slightly more tolerance - what gets them is the approach to the subject. If it is callous, they will get furious. They might even break their precious social conventions.
Sick Explorer™: Tries to get better as quickly as possible so that they can take care of any friends or loved ones who have also caught their sickness.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When struggling with sadness or gloom it is important to find new avenues for inspiration. Many feel better when they can get a change of scenery, go somewhere new or spend time outdoors. Simply being somewhere that is fresh and interesting can help find solutions and ideas that lead to renewed optimism. Talking to a close friend is also important. Wantst to be able to vent about what one is going through without having to worry about being judged, criticized or given a lot of “quick fixes”. It’s important to get empathy and validation for what is being experienced, not just a bunch of advice. May also feel better if can find a quiet, calming activity in which to be absorbed. e.g. Gardening, sewing, cooking or playing music can help feel comforted.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: Takes affirmative action regarding sickness.
7. Can it be the Promoter - ENFP?
Dialogue: The Promoter is extremely emotional which is a good thing. They are sensitive to other people and can often tear up over a sad video or scene in a movie. The Promoter might try to appear more guarded in front of others though and will try to hold these emotions in. They do not want to be seen as weak, so they will often bottle up their emotions. If they feel completely comfortable with someone though, the Promoter will not try to hold back these emotions. The Promoter will tear up fairly often but that does not mean they cry all that much. They are more likely to let themselves cry if they are alone or if they are drunk.
What to do: Observe when they are drunk.
Crybaby Tendency: Probably cries over a deep internalised crisis. Category 2/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: Having to self-isolate with no end in sight is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 11/16. Of all the feeling types, the Promoter somehow accomplishes being the most vivacious type; full of sensitive emotions and being incredibly insensitive. Somewhat surprising this ranking is so toward being leeast sensitive. The difference between the Specialist and the Promoter being insensitive is that the first one is intentional. The Promoter is skilled at reading the emotional environment but that often has a disconnect to what they say. Sometimes oblivious, they pick up on frayed nerves, yet choose to stress out people with a joke about deadlines (at which they are woedful). The Promoter can be incredibly kind, but their absentmindedness leads them to be extremely insensitive. Some of the jokes made in the absolute poorest taste can be made by the Promoter. When it comes to people being insensitive towards them, they are quite sensitive, but much less so than their introvert counterpart, the Agent.
Sick Explorer™: Refuses to rest or relax – disbelieving that this will help them get better – and goes about their day as usual, getting everyone they encounter sick in the process.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When feeling sad or down it is comforting to get some time alone to listen to music, be in nature or explore a new environment. New beautiful sights help feelin less trapped. After some time alone might find encouragement through talking to a trusted friend. It is important that a friend really listens to the heart and not just try to force a particular mood change. Wants someone to walk with them into their darkness and truly empathize with what is being experienced. Does not want someone who is going to pressure the making of a quick mood change or who is going to offer a lot of practical solutions right away. Solutions are for later, when this pattern feels calmer and more at peace with the world; if that is ever an option.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: Totally irresponsible regarding sickness. What a surprise.
8. Can it be the Counselor - ESFP
Dialogue: The Counselor can be a bit emotional especially if they have something causing them a lot of stress. They do not feel afraid to cry and will often be perfectly comfortable expressing this emotion. The Counselor understands that emotions are a part of life and do not feel ashamed to cry. If they are around people who love them, the Counselor will often be completely open. They can become saddened if they feel like they are being ignored or if someone has been mean to them. They are sensitive souls which can cause the Counselor to become hurt rather easily.
What to do: Watch for this when the Counselor is being held accountable in the workplace or similar. This can be particularly annoying to managers, especially the High Ds and the Enhancer.
Crybaby Tendency: The tears are endless. Category 1/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: Should Starbucks, or their similar local haunt, go out of business is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 7/16. The Counselor is extremely dramatic. But they are capable of being quite insensitive with what they say. This is generally when they are being mean, but there are occasions where they mean to be good but say something that does not take into account the emotions at play.
Sick Explorer™: Texts all their friends that they are dying, which they are not. Asks who wants to come over for a movie night.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When feeling overwhelmed and down it can be helpful to find a good friend to talk to. Wants someone who is a good listener, patient and non-judgmental. The last thing needed is someone interrupting with solutions or criticisms. Right now what they need someone who can just be with them in their darkness and accept where they are right now. Sometimes getting alone is helpful; this gives a chance to really reflect on what has happened, what the facts are and how to really feel about it. Coming up with some plans can also help. Whether it as a fun activity, a contingency plan or a practical solution. Getting a change of scenery, listening to music, or getting a hug from someone trusted can also be very therapeutic.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: Centre of attention with sickness, as per usual with all else.
9. Can it be the Specialist - ISFP
Dialogue: The Specialist can be a somewhat emotional person and might find themselves tearing up rather easily. If they see something that brings out their emotions, the Specialist will rarely be able to hold back their tears. They often try to keep from crying when they are in front of others and reserve this expression of emotion for when they are alone. Specialists are connected to the world around them and they feel things very deeply. They are not afraid of their emotions which means they are not afraid to cry.
What to do: Watch for this when the Specialist is being held accountable in the workplace or similar. This can be particularly annoying to managers, especially the High Ds and the Enhancer.
Crybaby Tendency: The tears are endless. Category 1/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: When someone looks at them the wrong way is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 10/16. It is somewhat surprising to see the Specialist this far towards the insensitive side but generally they tends to be one of the most jaded types. They are extremely kind but their emotions are extremely well-protected and many of them have a bitter cynicism. They are not insensitive, per se; they are just not affected by a large amount of sensitivity. If they say something insensitive, it is rare, but intentional.
Sick Explorer™: Secretly revels in having a socially acceptable excuse to stay home and do their own thing for a week or so.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When overwhelmed with life it is important to get away from all the pressures and commotion of the outside world. They need to just get alone and reflect on everything that is going on in their heart. The last thing needed is a lot of advice, criticism or solutions. That can wait till they are feeling a little bit better. When life is at its worst they just need to let the emotions channel through. Sometimes listening to music or watching a favourite movie that mirrors how they feel can be therapeutic. Catching up on some quiet exercise and a nap can also help feel renewed. When feel a little calmer it may be beneficial to find someone trusting to talk to. Ideally, this person would be non-judgmental, a good listener and would allow expression without trying to “change” their mood too quickly. They want to be with someone who can just be with them where they are and not put pressure on in any way.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: At least they stay at home when sick. It is easy to see why this pattern can be so difficult to manage as their mood is so fragile, weak and delicate.
10. Can it be the Investigator - INFJ?
Dialogue: The Investigator who is trying to be strong for those close can have a hard time crying. They will often hold back tears for fear that it will upset the people around them or make them seem like a burden. When an Investigator is feeling guarded they will likely not allow themselves to cry since they do not want to feel weak. Investigators might cry when they are alone and see this as a safe way to get out their emotions. When an Investigator has come to allow their functions to develop, they will likely feel more comfortable allowing themselves to cry. They are extremely sensitive to the world around them and can become emotional overwhelmed by even the smallest sight. The mature Investigator will likely cry rather easily and will be perfectly okay with doing this when alone.
What to do: Hard to observe.
Crybaby Tendency: Cries quietly out of sight and walks away as if nothing has happened. The only outward signs are damp eyes and a guarded and weary looking expression. Category 4/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: Everything or nothing is required to cause crying..
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 4/16. The Investigator is especially good at empathizing and sunconsciously adopting the ideas, emotions or attitudes of others. This causes them to get hurt easily and identifying with a range of causes means that they are emotionally invested. When someone comes along and with such suggestions as “let’s chip away from this”, the Investigator can get extremely offended and upset. An angry Investigator can be terrifying.
Sick Explorer™: Avoids medication unless they absolutely HAVE to take it, but stays home to rest and recoup. No way are they going to let others see them in a vulnerable state.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When feeling especially down, finds comfort in getting some time alone in a peaceful, quiet environment. Being able to wrap up in a blanket and listen to a favourite song or read a favorite book can be calming. It can also be helpful to take care of physical needs. As an intuitive-dominant personality, it can be easy to forget to take care of sensing/physical needs. Taking a hot bath, eating a healthy meal, staying hydrated or catching up on sleep are all ways that cause feeling better. After some time alone finding a trusted friend that to be honest with is important. Needs to be able to “vent” without feeling judged or analyzed. Does not want someone to try to give a bunch of practical solutions right away either. That is for later when feel more calm and composed. If does not have someone to talk to, or do not feel ready to talk to anyone, writing down thoughts and feelings is also a good option. Getting feelings outside in some form will help feeling as if they have a better handle on things.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: Thinks thay know better than the doctor when sick.
11. Can it be the Agent - INFP?
Dialogue: The Agent are sensitive souls with an incredible depth of emotions inside. Although the Agent is often viewed as sensitive they are not likely to cry often. Their emotions are something that is very personal and inward which often means the Agent does not feel a need to express them outwardly. They can often be sad and contemplate these feelings without actually shedding a tear. In some cases though, the Agent becomes overwhelmed with emotion and cannot help but let it out. They might even feel like this release is healthy and a good way to make themselves feel better. Agents might tear up easily, but that does not always result in a full blown cry session.
What to do: Watch for this when the Agent is being held accountable. This can be particularly annoying to managers, especially the High Ds and the Enhancer.
Crybaby Tendency: Probably cries over a deep internalized crisis. Category 2/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: If someone was illegally raising tigers on a large farm and they become too much for the owner to handle and then they all have to be shot is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 1/16. The most sensitive of the 16. While the Practitioner may be even more likely to get offended, the Agent is worthy of the ranking. They are the most likely to get upset, although the xNFJ types will express it the most; e.g. the angry Investigator is terrifying; the Persuader may get there but less so. Beware: The Achiever can be very angry too.
Sick Explorer™: Stays home and fantasizes (in a totally non-morbid way, of course) about all the nice things people would say about them at their funeral.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When feeling unhappy or overwhelmed it is important to get some peace and quiet away from the crowds and noise of the world. This is a freqyent occurrence. Many times listening to peaceful music, especially songs known and loved for a long time, can help bring back equilibrium. Wrapping up in a blanket and reading a favourite book or just allowing the feelings channel through can be helpful. Writing down thoughts and feelings is also helpful because sometimes it can feel like emotions are swirling around inside like a whirlwind and the Agent cannot even figure out what they all mean. When ready, try to find someone to talk to who has absolute trust. Is there someone who will just let you “vent” without judging? Someone who can listen without trying to make the Agent feel bad about their feelings? That is the kind of person needed.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: In La La Land, as usual. Seems permanently sensitive, miserable and lazy.
12. Can it be the Achiever - ISTP?
Dialogue: The Achiever is not an outwardly emotional person and will usually keep their feelings to themselves. They likely will not cry in front of others and prefer not to let themselves break down in this way. Achievers will usually only cry if something very serious happens which causes the tears to be completely justified. They are logical people and put this far above their emotions. They are not heartless though and will cry if something extremely sad happens to them or to someone close.
What to do: Rare to observe in the workplace.
Crybaby Tendency: Rarely, but when they do it is a flood. Category 3/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: Viewing the 1957 Disney movie 'Old Yeller' is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 15/16. Be careful here. Compared to the Perfectionist, the Achiever is more likely to frequent social situations and they can be incredibly offensive. Unlike the Perfectionist, this insensitivity is often intentional in nature, and far worse. While the Achiever has many positive parts, combining the rational nature of introverted thinking with their sensing capabilities allows them to wound deep. They can be malicious, knowing exactly where to strike to stir up argument. And unlike the Results, the offensive nature is not to be audacious, it can be seen as a counterpunch to the unfairness of society. The Achiever can be the cruelest, far more than the Developer or the Results. There can be suprising malice.
Sick Explorer™: Takes enough medication to get a little high and then relishes in the excuse to stay home and play video games.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When sad or frustrated it is important to get away from all the noise and chaos of day-to-day life. Find a quiet place, either at home or in nature, where thay can process what feeling and thinking about. Look at the to-do list and see if there are any non-essential responsibilities that can be cancelled. The mere act of lightening the to-do list can help to feel more optimistic. Sometimes getting the adrenaline out in a physical way can also be helpful. Try going for a jog, hiking or swimming. After some time alone it is very helpful to talk to someone who can listen without judging, criticizing or trying to coddle or over-sympathize. Tends to dislike it when people ask you a lot of questions about feelings.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: Stays at home when sick, at least that's good. Watch out for bad temper.
13. Can it be the Practitioner - ISFJ?
Dialogue: The Practitioners are not commonly the type of people to cry easily or openly. It often takes a rather serious crisis or event to cause the Practitioner to cry in front of others. They simply keep their emotions to themselves and rarely feel comfortable being this vulnerable in front of someone else. If they suppress their pain for too long though, the Practitioner might find themselves incapable of holding back for long. They will likely only cry when they are alone and need to let these emotions out somehow. They never want to feel like a burden to others which can cause the Practitioner to appear much more reserved and stoic.
What to do: Rare to observe in the workplace.
Crybaby Tendency: Probably cries over a deep internalised crisis. Category 2/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: Knowing they have deeply hurt someone’s feelings is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 2/16. Could claim position one. The Practitioner's (justified) care for social convention will bump up very hard against some of the most rational types. That includes the Developer, Inspirational, Achiever and Enhancer. Their inability to split anything away from personal considerations makes them argumentative and passive-aggressive. Oxor™ keeps beating on that they are the worst leaders and managers.
Sick Explorer™: Tries to convince everyone that they are fine, really and do not need any help. Secretly wishes that one of their loved ones would ignore their pleas and come and take care of them.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When sad or stressed it is important for you to get some time alone to not worry about what anyone else thinks or needs. It is hard for this pattern to fully relax around other people, so some quiet and solitude can help themu process their thoughts and feelings. It is also a good idea to take a moment and consider physical needs. They can get so busy taking care of other people and the to-do list that there is a risk of burnout. Take a walk somewhere quiet and beautiful, make sure hydrated, take a hot shower or catch up on some rest. If feeling as if emotions are eating up from the inside try getting a journal and writing down your feelings as they occur. Re-read what was written and see if that helps to organize feelings any better. Consider talking to a trusted friend who can provide empathy and validation for what they are now going through.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: Let's face it, not much to be proud of here regarding sickness.
14. Can it be the Objective Thinker - ISTJ?
Dialogue: The Objective Thinker rarely lets themselves cry and will usually bottle up their emotions. They dislike expressing themselves in front of others and will often attempt to remain stoic. OTs definitely care about those close and will work hard to provide for them. They simply do not want to be seen as weak and might feel far too exposed if they let themselves cry in front of someone. They are far more likely to cry when they are alone and do not have anyone around to judge them or misunderstand their sadness. It takes a lot for the Objective Thinker to trust someone enough to show their emotions openly but if they do trust someone this much they will likely hold onto that relationship forever.
What to do: You would need to be the 'best friend' of an Objective Thinker to observe this. Watch their eyes.
Crybaby Tendency: Cries quietly out of sight and walks away as if nothing has happened. The only outward signs are damp eyes and a guarded and weary looking expression. Category 4/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: Having to live in a studio apartment with small children is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 8/16. The Objective Thinker has a quite fragile ego. However, while the Appraiser is strengthened by social interaction, the Objective Thinker hardens because of their tendency to avoid large, crowded, situations. The upset that they feel tends to be more suppressed compared with the Director. Additionally, they are capable of withering criticism, but usually stifle the worst of it.
Sick Explorer™: Sticks, with determination, to whatever methods of getting better methods that they were taught as a child. Because that has always worked for them, why change?
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When life feels draining and depressing it is important to balance getting some time alone and some time with someone trusted. Many times a peaceful, quiet environment where process of thoughts and feelings can take place is ideal. Cancelling some non-essential plans can help feeling less overwhelmed. Allowing sitting with feelings, no matter how hard they are, and just letting them come and go is important. If they feel like nothing is helping, try talking to a friend who is a very good listener. Ideally, this would be someone who is not quick to judge, criticize or get emotional. This pattern does not want a lot of coddling or optimistic one-liners. They just want someone who can listen and be with them where they are at right now. May also find it comforting to watch a favourite movie or listen to a favourite song.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: Responsible for their actions when sick.
15. Can it be the Perfectionist - INTP?
Dialogue: Perfectionists definitely feel things very deeply but they often try to keep these emotions bottled up inside. Perfectionists rarely cry especially when they are in front of other people. Usually they will hold their emotions in and attempt to ignore how they are feeling entirely. Perfectionists do not want to feel weak and they especially do not want to feel like people are judging them for feeling a certain way. They prefer to push their own feelings aside in the hope of keeping it together and being strong. Perfectionist do often reach points where they cannot hold their emotions in any longer and might end up unable to hold in their tears any longer. They will usually try to hide this from the people close to them and will rarely cry in front of others.
What to do: Difficult to observe.
Crybaby Tendency: Probably cries over a deep internalized crisis. Category 2/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: Any animated TV show or movie with a good soundtrack is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 13/16. The 'TP' types are the most likely to say “Screw being polite. Here’s this.” But the Perfectionist is the least likely to engage in this. Partly because they have a disinterest in being mean and partly because they are the most likely to avoid social situations where they could offend. However, the Perfectionist's dedication to logic means that they often do not see reason. Sometimes, being rational can be deeply hurtful. They do not always understand that and, worse, they can be apathetic.
Sick Explorer™: Googles ten thousand variations of what they might have and ends up in the depths of Wikipedia, learning about a strange Polynesian virus that died out 1000 years ago.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When feeling exhausted and sad it is important to get some time alone to sort everything out internally. May feel comforted by revisiting a favourite song, movie or book that had been enjoyed since childhood. The familiar can be comforting and calming during high-stress moments. It is important not to become too reclusive, though. After some time it can be therapeutic to get a change of scenery, walk around somewhere new or talk to a trusted friend. Is there someone who will permit “venting” without judging or jumping to conclusions? The important thing is to be able to talk to someone without feeling judged, criticized or overwhelmed with hasty solutions. It can be tempting to completely isolate during sadness – and that is fine for a little while. But too much of it can cause an unhealthy introverted thinking-introverted sensing loop. So try to get out after a little while, talk to trusted people and spend some time in nature.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: With sickness, theoretical solutions override a visit to the Chemist Warehouse. No surprise there.
16. Can it be the Enhancer - INTJ?
Dialogue: The Enhancers are not the type to dwell on their emotions and will often bottle them up for a long time. The Enhancer does not feel comfortable with crying or any overt expression of emotions. They will often attempt to hold their sadness in for a long time until they finally boil over. Enhancers will cry because they have gone far too long without allowing themselves to pay attention to their own emotions and finally they force their way out through their tear ducts. The Enhancer will often attempt to keep this to themselves and will not want it to happen in front of another person. In some cases though, if someone they care about has hurt them deeply, the Enhancer simply cannot hold it in any longer.
What to do: Nothing, unless you are one of the Enhancers Inner Circle and you need to be the shoulder to cry on. Very difficult to observe, even their eyes. Enhancers are smart and do not wear sunglasses for nothing on occasions.
Crybaby Tendency: Cries quietly out of sight and walks away as if nothing has happened. The only outward signs are damp eyes and a guarded and weary looking expression. Category 4/4.
E. Hunter Utterance™: Having their grandmother die is required to cause crying.
Sensitivity Explorer™ 1 is most sensitive; 16 least: 15/16. It is not surprising that the Enhancer is vying for being the most insensitive. Many (all) Enhancers create an aura of superiority while not intending to do so. This is not well recevied by many patterns, especially the Appraiser and Practitioner. The Enhancer also possesses the ruthless drive of the Developer which cuts out social customs and combines it with a sometimes willful ignorance and lack of care about social graces. This creates someone who avoids small talk actively, gets directly into business and who can step on other people’s emotions to achieve the goals. They have the occasional motto of the “ends justify the means” and the means for them, so often, are insensitive. This lack of knowledge about how their actions will emotionally impact others is in part ignorance, not reading the room; and, in part, simply being oblivious. They do not know that a certain action will create upset and, not maliciously, they simply do not care. However, the Enhancer is usually not either intentionally mean or insensitive. Elizabeth Hunter™ is exactly like this, as those of the cohort have discovered.
Sick Explorer™: Pops some drugs, ignores their sickness and grows steadily more annoyed each time someone asks them how they are feeling.
Cheer Up! Explorer™: When feeling sad or overwhelmed finds comfort in getting away from the commotion and noise of daily life. Getting alone in a quiet, tranquil environment, dimming the lights and having complete stillness for a while helps you to regain composure. It is important during this time to take a moment to assess physical needs. As an intuitive dominant personality type, it can be easy to forget what your body needs. Make sure to drink enough water, get enough rest and take a moment to take a hot shower, bath or just get some fresh air. Look at the schedule as well; are there any activities that can be cancelled without negative consequences? Lightening the workload and freeing up some time can give a feeling of comfort. After some quiet time alone, it can be helpful to talk to a friend who understands the Enhancer and has established trust. Ideally, this person would permit chat without judging or getting too emotional about things. Needs someone who can just listen without interrupting and eventually offer some ideas that might lead to solutions.
E. Hunter Utterance™ 2: With sickness, tends to plough on regardless. The lone wolf, as usual.
